Indiana Senate Moves Ahead on Industrial Hemp Bill

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail, January 25, 2014 – Indiana’s Senate Agriculture Committee voted unanimously Jan. 24 in favor of legislation to legalize industrial hemp as a crop pending federal approval. Bill sponsor Sen. Richard Young pointed out that hemp was an important crop in Indiana before and during World War II. He said that “This is a plant that has been used for centuries throughout the world and has tremendous potential.”

If the bill is passed by both the state Senate and House and signed into law by the governor, Indiana will join the ten states which have already approved industrial hemp as a legal crop:

California, Colorado, Kentucky, Maine, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia.

NAIHC Board Member Alan Kimbell was one of the experts who testified in favor of the legislation in the Senate Agriculture Committee hearing. There was no opposition testimony.
